Every morning my alarm goes off, and every morning I hit “snooze”, sound familiar? Creating a morning routine can feel overwhelming. With so little time before the day begins, it can be difficult to find time to put yourself first. However, creating a morning routine can help increase your productivity throughout the day, reduce stress, and enhance your mood. The key to creating a successful morning routine is, keeping it simple. Start slow, only work in one step at a time, once you have mastered one, move on to the next. Over time, you will find you are able to quickly and efficiently complete your self-care before breakfast!
Below are four easy steps to creating a morning routine that works for you.
WRITE A LIST BEFORE BED
Do you have an early meeting? Need to remember to take out the trash cans? It all starts with emptying your mind before bed. Keep a notepad and pen on your nightstand and take notes or write down reminders for the next day, in doing so, you are mentally preparing for what the next day will bring while reducing and stress and anxiety. You also might find your quality of sleep increases due to your mind feeling more at ease. Creating a meaningful routine not only enhances how you feel, but it also improves your quality of life. Simply put, when you feel good, you do good – you might find yourself having more patience with your children, noticing the small, yet joyful moments you might have overlooked before, but most of all, when you take care of you, you are then able to give your family and loved ones the same love and support without feeling overwhelmed or depleted.
WAKE UP AT THE SAME TIME EVERY DAY
Our bodies have a natural clock, and it doesn’t take long to train that clock. If you find you are always running late for work, set your alarm 30 minutes earlier than normal, allot for snooze time, but make sure your feet are on the ground at the same time every day. In doing so, your body will begin to recognize a pattern, sustaining your energy levels throughout the day, improving REM sleep patterns and banishing feelings of mid-day fatigue.
DRINK A WARM WATER
While we sleep our body is hard at work digesting the food we ate throughout the day. Drinking warm water in the morning helps to flush out any unwanted toxins and wakes up your digestive system. Support liver and kidney functions but getting your system working first thing in the morning, drink 1 cup warm or hot water with a squeeze of lemon. Bonus! Most people find when starting the day with warm water, they make healthier choices at meals during the day.
If you haven’t started your meditation practice yet, now is the time. There are hundreds of benefits that positively impact your body and mind. By quieting your mind for 5 -15 minutes first thing in the morning, you are more likely to reduces stress, control anxiety and lengthen your attention span throughout the day. Are you worried you won’t be able to sit through a long session? Start slow with 1 minute of breathing, work your way up to 5 minutes and then see how far you can take your practice. Consider a guided practice via apps like Calm or Insight Timer if you are just starting out.
