If you’re a beauty junkie like me then you’ve probably heard the terms ‘natural’ and ‘clean’ bouncing around the beauty space a lot recently. It seems that every day there’s a new brand touting their ingredient decks and talking about how making the switch to more natural cosmetics will change not only your skin, but your life.

If you’re also a tad skeptical about these claims, I don’t blame you. The powerful marketing of the beauty industry has lead us to believe that conventional cosmetics deliver far superior results than its natural counterparts.

Naturally, – see what I did there, wink – this has sparked a serious debate around natural vs conventional skincare and cosmetics. Which is better? Which will deliver the best results? Is one really healthier than the other? This can leave customers like you and me very confused. Thankfully, I’m here to shed some light on this subject and talk about how going natural has impacted my skin.

I thought I’d start off first by chatting a bit about my skin. I have oily skin; it’s prone to breakouts (sometimes cystic acne, yikes!) and serious congestion. My skin is not particularly sensitive but does tend to be a bit red and splotchy. Although I’m oily, my skin is often dehydrated and needs some serious moisture.

Overall, I have pretty troubled skin and has never been easy to deal with. I always assumed my skincare routine was going to be an uphill battle and my future full of harsh products and dermatologists’ prescriptions.

At this point, 2 years ago, I had never looked into clean and natural beauty. I was using what I thought was natural, but I soon learned these products that touted the word “natural” didn’t always mean they were made up of natural ingredients. Maybe only a portion of the ingredients were natural…maybe only 1%. It wasn’t until I looked deeper into the ingredient labels on my most used products that I started to understand how important it is to be conscious of what you are putting on your skin.

After my cosmetic ingredient awakening, I started to learn (1) about all the amazing benefits of natural ingredients, and (2) the scary ingredients that are looming inside conventional cosmetics. From formaldehyde (ew), parabens (possibly cancer-causing agents!!), Sodium lauryl sulfate (could be the cause of those breakouts), BHA and coal tar (both carcinogens!), these scary ingredients found in the very products intended to beautify us are not only compromising the condition of our skin, but of our health as a whole! Shocking right.

But, there was one thing I was struggling with. And that was the idea that conventional products are better than natural products. I mean, obviously right? I’ve always been told that natural products don’t make the cut, won’t deliver the results, and aren’t built for performance. But boy was I wrong. It took trying out tonnes of natural makeup myself to change my mind. I was hesitant at first, but once I started to see results, and quickly, I knew I was on to something.

My solution was to little by little introduce as many clean and natural products into my routine as possible. This way my transition wouldn’t be a shock to my skin or my wallet.

I’ve always been a makeup lover. I’ll even admit that I’ve used makeup as a crutch. Perhaps that was to boost my confidence and made me feel like I can take on the world, or maybe just the grocery store. I would never leave the house without makeup kind of girl. Beach? Got my waterproof mascara? ✔️Gym. Tinted moisturizer? ✔️School. Kim K level contour? ✔️The grocery store at 11:39pm? Full face of makeup? ✔️

Looking back, I’ve realized that I wore so much makeup not because I didn’t feel beautiful, it was simply that I didn’t feel confident in my bare skin. My splotchy face and dark circles made me feel like a sleepless zombie, for sure not a girl boss.

But as my routine slowly converted over more and more to natural products, I started seeing results in my skin that I had never imagined possible. Firstly, my acne started to diminish. Scarring disappeared. Red splotchiness became an even tone and my dark circles brightened. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing with my own eyes. For the first time ever, I could wake up in the morning, look in the mirror, and leave my house, without any makeup.

Want to know what’s even crazier? I’d only switched 1/2 of my skincare over to natural products.
